What is macular disease?

Macular disease is the leading cause of sight loss in the UK, and with more than twice as many people affected than have dementia. It affects nearly 1.5m people of all ages. Every day 300 more people are diagnosed with macular disease.

The Macular Society is the leading charity providing support to people who are affected by macular disease, the number one cause of sight loss in the UK. The charity’s vision is to Beat Macular Disease and, by taking care of your eyes, we can help them achieve this.

What is the macula?

The macula is a small area of the retina on which light rays entering the eye are focused, resulting in clear central vision. Deterioration of the macula results in the loss of central vision and usually occurs in both eyes. Most people experience no symptoms in the early stages but, as the macular cells degenerate, vision may become blurred or distorted and objects change shape, size or colour. The most common form of this painless condition is age-related macular degeneration, usually affecting people aged 65 and over.
