How can you prevent conjunctivitis?

Wash your hands regularly and keep them clean using antibacterial hand soap or sanitiser, especially before and after eating, or touching your eyes.
Regularly wash your eyes (several times a day) to avoid any bacterial build-up. This is particularly important if you wear makeup. You will also want to remove traces of eye makeup completely.
Change your pillowcase regularly, to remove any bacteria that may be on your pillow causing your eyes to be prone to infection.
If you do have pink eye, try not to worsen the condition by constantly rubbing your eye(s) with your fingers. Simply use a clean tissue to wipe away the discharge.
Avoid sharing your contact lenses, glasses, eye make-up, eye drops, and sunglasses with anyone else.
Discard disposable lenses when wearing contact lenses, and make sure all your eyewear is thoroughly cleaned each time before use.
Limit the number of eye drops you use to treat conjunctivitis. Eye drops are helpful because they are antibacterial, but overusing them might redden or irritate your eyes.
In the case of conjunctivitis, don't cover your eye with a patch, as this may worsen the infection. Instead, use a warm compress soaked in lukewarm water, which is cooled boiled water 3–4 times a day. This will ease the pain, reduce eyelid swelling, and minimise redness.
